Virtual Riders is based in the North East of the United Kingdom and at the moment is only funded to cover the Humber region. You are welcome to use the facilities on this site, but unfortunately we cannot support organisations or individuals from further afield.

The BIG LOTTERY FUND under the BASIS programme.
The BASIS programme aims to improve the infrastructure support available to all voluntary and community sector organisations in England.
FoLDA
Stands for the Federation of Local Development Agencies. It is a constituted body which acts on a sub-regional basis to develop the voluntary and community sector through collaborative working.
It has an ICT sub group made up of interested representatives from the FoLDA organisations and invited specialists.
Principles
We have signed up to a set of values and principles which have been designed by the great and the good in the field of ICT in the voluntary sector. The idea behind this is to give you piece of mind. We are here to help the VCF (Voluntary, Community and Faith) Sector and we will always work in good faith. By signing up to a set of principles (see document ) we are making a commitment to the sector and can be challenged if we let you down.
Circuit Riders
Technology Circuit Riders were first developed in the USA. They are described as:
A Circuit Rider is someone who provides technology assistance to the nonprofit sector. The help a Rider gives varies from helping to set up a local area network (LAN) to coaching an Executive Director to advocate for technology funding to the board. Part technology cheerleader, evangelist and skilled technologist, Riders come in many forms. In some cases foundations fund several Riders to service their grantees. Riders sometimes are housed within existing technology support provider organizations. Many Riders operate as independent consultants and in some cases a community of nonprofits might pool resources and hire a Rider. The circuit riding community grew out of the U.S. progressive social change and environmental movements, as well as other technology assistance efforts. The Riders hold an annual conference, The Round-Up, and also currently engage in a strategic planning process to determine some coordinated future actions.

Virtual Riders
With such a big area to cover in the Humber (more than 1000 square miles), we have renamed Circuit Riders to Virtual Riders who communicate through the phone and the net. There are not very many people out there supporting the voluntary sector so we want to include all those who have responsibility for ICT in their organisation to take advantage of this site and to communicate with each other, not just with technical issues, but also to support each other, and to debate with funders, networks, policy-makers and suppliers. .
